Women from mountain ranges all over the world gathered in Alpbach on 18-19 April to discuss their role and their wishes for the changes in mountain societies in the future. Be it in the field of economy, ecology or social and cultural aspects, challenges that women face in the various mountain ranges are very different. Yet they have at least one thing in common: they strive towards a stronger role. A step towards this is the Declaration on the Role of Women in Mountain Regions, that was first presented at the Conference by the Austrian Minister Andrä Rupprechter. As the Deputy Secretary General Ms. Elmi highlighted in her keynote speech, the participants’ different backgrounds contributed to very interesting discussions throughout the two days. The event was organized by the Austrian Presidency of the Alpine Convention.
