Alenka Smerkolj takes office as Secretary General of the Alpine Convention

Today, Mrs Alenka Smerkolj officially takes over the Permanent Secretariat as Secretary General of the Alpine Convention from Ambassador Markus Reiterer. Mrs Smerkolj has long-year experience in international banking and management and has also served as the minister responsible for development, strategic projects and cohesion in the Slovenian government between 2014 and 2018.
 

Reiterer served in the position of Secretary General for six years: “I am very grateful that I had a chance to work with a team of highly qualified and engaged people for the protection and sustainable development of our precious region, I wish my successor every conceivable success for her important and challenging work. I am confident that the fruitful cooperation between the Permanent Secretariat and the partners of the Alpine Convention throughout the Alps will continue”.

Secretary General, Mrs Smerkolj: “I’ll strive in the first place to be the Secretary General of all the Contracting Parties and Partners and I wish to warmly thank my predecessor for his efforts and achievements. The goal of the protection and sustainable development of the Alps as a pioneer region for sustainable living in the heart of Europe is as relevant today as it was 27 years ago. I believe in the power of teamwork, dialogue and open communication with all stakeholders. While demonstrating this attitude, Mountains can be moved”. The priorities set by the Multi-Annual Work Programme 2017-2022 will further serve as leitmotif in the years to come.
