Mountain countries meet in Aspen

The Sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership took place from 26-29 September 2022 in Aspen, USA. The Alpine Convention participated in this highlight of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022 together with delegates from 97 mountain countries of the world.

The meeting featured high-level statements and various panel discussions. It provided an excellent opportunity for exchange with representatives of other institutions and countries. In the panel on transboundary cooperation, Deputy Secretary General Wolfger Mayrhofer presented the activities of the Alpine Convention in the field of mountain biodiversity and the mountain governance experience of the Alpine Convention as precedent for the Carpathian Convention and other mountain related interregional dialogues.

The Mountain Partnership is the United Nations voluntary alliance of partners dedicated to mountain peoples and environments, and its secretariat is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The outcome document of the meeting, the Aspen Declaration, promotes cooperation among mountain countries on a wide range of issues including the economy, social development, environment, culture, science and education, as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
