Desertification and droughts are becoming an worrying topic in many Alpine valleys which depend on water coming from the disappearing Alpine glaciers, heavily threatened by climate change. Beyond the Alps, many regions vastly rely on glacial and snow waters. It is very important that the Alpine Countries act on these topics with common strategies; this is why the Water platform of the Alpine Convention will work on drought periods in the Alpine Region as a priority topic in the mandate 2017-2018. Today, on the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought we highlight the need for all of us to join efforts in the combat of against desertification and drought also in our, Alpine, region.
