Learn about quality of life in the Alps in the RSA 10

The Alpine Convention is pleased to announce that the 10th Report on the State of the Alps (RSA 10) on Quality of life in the Alps has been published in all Alpine languages!

The RSA 10 is an outcome of the Slovenian Presidency (2023-2024) and is the first endeavour by the Alpine Convention to address this issue as a whole, not only as a collection of efforts in different fields. The Report on the State of the Alps (RSA) is a serial publication elaborated every two years through the active participation of experts from the Alpine Convention’s Contracting Parties and Observers who are closely connected to the respective topic of the report.

The RSA 10 introduces a general concept of quality of life, exploring its ecological, economic, and social dimensions in the Alpine region. It analyses statistical and spatial data as well as the results of an Alpine-wide survey and other relevant sources to provide an overview of the current state of quality of life.

The Report also looks to the future and explores the different challenges that are already endangering our quality of life and will continue to do so: climate change, biodiversity loss, demographic and economic changes are some of the key threats. The Report especially emphasises the role of governance in addressing these challenges. Due to the interrelation of the challenges, all actions to address them should be based on cross-sectoral collaboration, consider the specificities of a certain territory (place-based), and ensure public participation in policymaking processes.

Seven policy recommendations outlined in the RSA 10 aim to strengthen resilience of the Alpine region and secure a good quality of life for the Alpine inhabitants – also in future. The recommendations, which should be implemented at different administrative levels also contribute to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Report is available in the four Alpine languages and English. A ‘print-at-home’ factsheet in all languages is also available for anyone who would like to contribute to the dissemination of the Report.

A special thanks goes to the designers of the RSA 10, Studio Podobarna, and everyone who contributed to the Report.
