We are pleased to bring you an update of ongoing implementation activities being carried out by the Contracting Parties, Observer organisations, and Infopoints of the Alpine Convention. This non-exhaustive overview offers insight into the important work being done to bring the Alpine Convention to life on the ground.
The Italian Presidency of the Alpine Convention invites you to the international conference on ‘Glaciers, Permafrost, Snow, and Water’ on 11 December 2025. This event, which is being held at Forte di Bard in the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta, is part of the activities for the elaboration of the 11th Report on the State of the Alps. It is also a celebration of International Mountain Day and the 2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation. The event will be livestreamed with simultaneous interpretation in Italian and English.
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management is Lead Partner in the project ‘HumanFactor’, co-funded by the Interreg Alpine Space Programme. ‘HumanFactor’ aims to empower Alpine communities to actively shape transformation and put a spotlight on the ‘human factor’ in decision-making and implementation activities.

- The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety is funding a project on unsealing land in the Alpine region with the aim of developing practical and transferable solutions for unsealing land and facilitating sustainable spatial planning collaboration. At the first workshop in Vöran (IT) on 20 November 2025, the Ifuplan Institute and the Plattform Land Südtirol presented the piloting phase of unsealing concepts in Vöran as well in Steingaden (DE).
- Liechtenstein’s Office of Environment, together with CIPRA International and the SDG Alliance, launched a campaign dedicated to quality of life on 21 October 2025. Consisting of posters containing key messages from the 10th Report on the State of the Alps, the aim of the campaign is to encourage reflection and action among the local inhabitants in Schaan (LI).

The Slovenian Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning and the Slovenian Mountaineering Association prepared a set of guidelines to support the Slovenian villages in upholding the mission and goals of the Mountaineering Villages.
The Interreg Alpine Space project X-RISK-CC has launched a digital library with an open WebGIS platform that gives easy access to Alpine-wide information on past and future weather extremes, including guidance on how to use and interpret the data. These resources support and strengthen climate risk management, impact studies, and adaptation planning by local, regional, and national practitioners in the Alps.
Euromontana is pleased to announce the dates for the next European Mountain Convention 2026 from 9-11 June 2026 in Sallanches (FR)! Organised in collaboration with SUACI Montagn'Alpes, the event will echo and contribute to the objectives of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 and will explore the theme of extensive livestock farming in mountain areas and pastoralism.
The results of the international conference FutureForum Alps 2025, organised by CIPRA International on the topic ‘H2O: precious, powerful, scarce’ are now available in a new poster. View it online or request a free printed copy from CIPRA at international@cipra.org.

AVadapt is a study assessing the impacts of climate change on Alpine infrastructure and mountain sports and developing adaptation measures that consider the potential of nature-based solutions. It is a joint project by Club Arc Alpin and the German Alpine Club, supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management. As part of the project, three films were produced: ‘When glaciers are gone…’, ‘When water goes missing…’ and ‘When mountains are crumbling…’.
The GOVQoL project’s aim is to strengthen local municipal administrations throughout the Alpine region to sustainably improve the local quality of life. As a partner in the project, Alliance in the Alps is working in four pilot municipalities in Germany and Austria to create individual strategies to improve the quality of life in each village or region.
The next ForumAlpinum will be held in the Aosta Valley region in Italy, organised by ISCAR, and will take place in the last week of May 2026. The topic will be ‘Alpine communities and territories in a time of climate crisis and glacier loss’.
- ALPARC (lead partner) and CIPRA International are cooperating on the Interreg Alpine Space project LiveAlpsNature, which aims to reduce the impact of outdoor activities by developing offers and measures that reconcile nature and human well-being, leveraging digital tools for visitor management and guidance. The outputs will be implemented in several Alpine protected areas involved in the project.

The first German Infopoint of the Alpine Convention opened in Sonthofen, the headquarters of the Alpine Town of the Year association, at the end of October 2025. Ingrid Fischer, Second Mayor of Sonthofen and Co-President of the association, has been committed to implementing the Alpine Convention for many years and played a key role in securing the location. Out of the Alpine Convention’s ten Infopoints, five are now located in Alpine Towns of the Year.

The Ötscher-Tormäuer Climate Research Project, located in the Alpine Convention’s Infopoint, aims to investigate the effects of climate change on biodiversity, agriculture, forestry, and social processes in Alpine settlements. With the help of locals and scientists, the goal is to provide transferable solutions for research, knowledge transfer, and raising awareness in the context of the Alpine Convention.
The Dobratsch Nature Park, the Alpine Convention’s Infopoint in Villach, has partnerships with several schools and a kindergarten. These ‘Nature Park Schools’ and ‘Nature Park Kindergarten’ have recently obtained the Austrian Ecolabel (‘Österreichisches Umweltzeichen’) after undergoing a demanding certification process. This represents an important step towards strengthening the Nature Park and promoting the concept of sustainability among children and youth.
