Young voices for a climate-resilient alpine future

20th edition of the YPAC in Chamonix

From 23 to 27 March 2026, young students from across the Alpine region gathered in Chamonix (FR) for the 20th edition of the Youth Parliament to the Alpine Convention (YPAC). Marking two decades of youth engagement in Alpine policy, this milestone event brought together participants from 7 Alpine countries to exchange ideas, debate challenges, and develop joint solutions under the central theme of “climate resilient development.”

The opening ceremony began with a speech from a representative of the Permanent Secretariat, after which the Alpine Convention film was screened. The day ended with each delegation presenting the cultural customs of their region, such as local food, languages and dances.

The general assembly was officially opened by the Mayor of Chamonix, who welcomed participants and emphasised the importance of involving young people in shaping the Alps future. This was followed by a symbolic tree-planting ceremony to celebrate 20 years of YPAC.

Another key moment of the week was the excursion to the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France which was an impactful experience for everyone but also acted as a stark reminder of the retreat of glaciers.

From Tuesday to Wednesday the students worked in four committees, each focusing on a different subtopic within the theme “climate resilient development”. Throughout the session, delegates collaborated and discussed proposals addressing glaciers, energy transition, climate education, and economic resilience in the Alps. Their work culminated in a final resolution reflecting a collective vision for a more resilient Alpine region.

As YPAC celebrates its 20th edition, it continues to serve as a vital platform connecting young people with Alpine policymaking and ensuring that their voices help shape the future of the Alpine region.

“I was asked about the role of YPAC within the Alpine Convention. Your role is to be the young voice. You come from 7 of the Alpine countries and jointly discuss Alpine Convention topics. This makes you our first choice whenever we see the opportunity to bring in a young perspective.” - Vera Bornemann, Project Officer at the Alpine Convention
