Alpine Convention joins celebrations for the 30th Danilo Re Memorial

The Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention was pleased to be part of the 30th edition of the traditional Danilo Re Memorial that was hosted by Triglav National Park (Slovenia) from 22 to 25 January! Over these four days, rangers and representatives from many of the Alpine protected areas gathered to share insights and exchange on ongoing activities as well as taking part in the traditional sports competition.

Secretary General of the Alpine Convention Alenka Smerkolj attended the Alparc General Assembly, in which Alparc’s current and future activities were discussed. She highlighted that “many of the Convention’s topics are closely connected to Alparc’s work, and we rely on Alparc to continue actively contributing to the Alpine Convention, particularly in advancing the future Alpine Biodiversity Action Plan”.

Following the General Assembly, participants gathered for the rangers’ seminar, which is always a highlight of the event. It offers a chance to gain insights into the work carried out by the rangers and the different protected areas, this time on the topic of the ‘Management of visitor flows in sensitive natural areas by Alpine rangers and available tools’. This year, the Permanent Secretariat organised a small quiz for participants to test their knowledge of the Alpine Convention during which they were asked to describe the Alpine Convention in one word – these were the results!

The Permanent Secretariat once again had two teams participating in the sports competition. Alongside 40 teams from protected areas, they competed in the four disciplines ski mountaineering, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and shooting.
