The Multiannual Work Programme (MAP) of the Alpine Conference 2005-2010
The VIIIth Alpine Conference of 2004 adopted a work-programme for the years 2005 - 2010 in order to ensure continuity to the work of the Alpine Convention bodies. This work-programme includes:
- public relations,
- exchange of experience and cooperation within the Alpine region and other mountain regions and conventions,
- monitoring and interpretation of developments,
- preparation of Reports on the State of the Alps and
- activities in thematic areas not yet covered by Protocols (e.g. water).
Within these priorities, four main issues were selected:
Mobility, accessibility, traffic
The main issue here is the improvement of the accessibility of remote mountain areas (availability of goods and services etc.), relocation of traffic from roads to railways and strengthening public passenger transport.
Society, culture, identity
Among the most important objectives is the promotion of cultural identity by combining tradition and innovation, the further development of the Alpine cultures and the ensuring of basic services.
Tourism, leisure, sports
Tourism and related economic sectors are one of the most important sources of income in the Alpine region and they particularly depend on intact nature. The main objectives are strengthening the competitiveness of ecological (close-to-nature) tourism and promoting concepts aiming at cooperation between the tourist industry, agriculture, forestry and handicrafts.
Nature, agriculture and forestry, cultural landscape
Nature and the cultural landscape are the most important resources of the Alpine region. Main priorities are the creation of a cross-border network of protected areas, the exchange of experiences on integrated rural development and cross-border cooperation for the prevention of natural hazards.
